Abstract
In an effort to obtain the basic data on the sanitary status of sea water at Inchon harbour the author has made a surey in water samples taken from the harbour during the period from July 25 to early November 1973.
The samples were collected from three seemingly representative areas in the outer sea and one in the inner sea.
The results of the analysis in physico-chemical elements, bacterial contamination and biological aspect of the sea ware obtained by location, depth of water and calendar month.
The summary of the findings is as follows.
1. The temperature, pH and chloride ion measured on the average at 21.0¡É, 8.2 and 18,183 ppm respectively were all in the normal ranges.
2. The mean values of B.O.D, NH_(3)-N and petroleum-ether soluble substances were estimated at 26 ppm, 0.37 ppm and 20.6 ppm respectively, which indicate a relatively higher degree of contamiilation by organic substances and oil matters.
3. There was no substantial difference in temperature and pH between the outer and inner sea water samples, whereas the former showed a remarkable decrease in the turbidity, B.O.D, suspended matters, NH_(3)-N and petroleum-ether soluble substances.
4. The findings Showed no substantial diffefence by depth of water or by calendar month except some influence by the climatic changes (i.e., temperature, amount of rainfall etc.)
5. The seawater was found to be rather heavily contaminated by bacteria specially E. coli group and the everage contamination rate by Vibrio parahemolyticus was 17.5 per cent.
6. The serological typings of typical Vibrio parahaemotyticus isolated from the sea water were K-3, K-15, K-32, K-34, K-41 and K-52.
7. The number of general bacteria and E. coli group in sea water found to be the largest in July and August.
8. The amount of Chlorophyll-a was measured on the average at 1.72§·/§© which was much lower than the standard ualue of 10§·/§© which is being generally acceptad for inner sea water.
This indicates that the sea water at Inchon harbour is heavily contaminated.
